Genomics is recognized as part of the solution to many challenges in agribusiness. Among its most evident applications are the improvement and management of genetic resources, pedigree registration, certification of origin, traceability, breed composition certification, and sanitary defense. Despite its complexity, the application of genomics can be summarized in seven well-defined steps:
Genomic data is silver; non-genomic data is gold. Thanks to recent major technological advances, the generation of genomic data has increasingly come to resemble a commodity model. Therefore, the true impact of genomics on agribusiness arises from transforming data into information. This depends on integrating and linking genomics with non-genomic data—such as phenotypes, pedigrees, and the history of the animal or plant population under study. The AgroPartners team has experience in organizing and guiding the collection of such data and places this expertise at its clients' disposal.
Any animal or plant tissue with high cellularity is a potential candidate for DNA recovery. However, certain tissues are strategically advantageous due to the practicality of collection, ease of storage, convenience of transport, and efficiency of laboratory processing. Our team provides full support to ensure that suitable biological samples are collected in the field, arrive at the laboratory intact, and yield high-quality DNA in large quantities.
Currently, few genomics applications involve the use of the complete DNA sequence. Most are satisfied by using a sample of points distributed across the genome. Some applications require thousands of points, while others use only a few dozen. Naturally, the number of points captured is positively correlated with the technology's cost: the more points, the higher the cost. Briefly, the technologies available on the market for the various point densities are:
(i) PCR-based assays for dozens;
(ii) Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS) for hundreds or even a few thousand;
(iii) SNP chips for many thousands;
(iv) complete sequencing (next- and third-generation sequencing) for millions of points.
